زیرکن به‌عنوان یکی از کانی‌های مقاوم در فرآیندهای پس از تبلور می‌تواند آثار رویدادهای زمین‌شناسی را در خود حفظ نماید و از جمله کاربردهای مهم آن تعیین دما، ماهیت و خاستگاه ماگمای سنگ‌ها بر پایه بررسی ریخت شناسی است. بررسی ریخت‌شناسی زیرکن‌های گرانیتوئید کرتاسه و خروجی هم ارز آن در جنوب شرق سقز نشان می‌دهد که اغلب این بلورها از نوع P5 و S25 هستند و میانگین شاخص‌ دما و قلیایی بالایی (به ترتیب 9/672 و 9/637) را دارند. کمترین دمای تبلور محاسبه شده برای زیرکن‌های منطقه بر پایه بررسی ریخت­شناسی، اشباع شدگی Zr و شیمی سنگ کل حدود 600 تا 750 درجه سانتی‌گراد است. و وجود میانبار‌هایی از آپاتیت و ترکیب کانی‌شناسی نشان می‌دهد که ماگمای این سنگ‌ها به نسبت آبدار بوده است. براساس روند تکاملی گونه‌شناسی، این سنگ‌ها از نوعI  و وابسته به سری آهکی قلیایی هستند که با نتایج زمین شیمی همخوانی دارد و از ماگمای ترکیبی با خاستگاه پوسته و گوشته تشکیل شده‌اند.
