معدن زغال‌سنگ غزنوی در 45 کیلومتری جنوب شهرستان آزادشهر واقع شده و یکی از معادن فعال استان گلستان است. استخراج زغال از لایه‌های زغال‌دار اول و سوم معدن غزنوی صورت می‌پذیرد. بررسی­های کانی‌شناسی به وسیله روش پراش پرتو x (XRD) و میکروسکوپ الکترونی روبشی مجهز به طیف پراش انرژی پرتو x (SEM/EDS) بیانگر حضور کوارتز و کانی‌های رسی به عنوان کانی‌های اصلی و کانی­های پیریت (± پیریت آرسنیک‌دار)، ژیپس، ژاروسیت (ناتروژاروسیت)، گوتیت، هماتیت، پلاژیوکلاز، فلدسپات قلیایی، ± روتیل، ± کروندوم و ± برلینیت کانی‌های فرعی در زغال‌سنگ غزنوی هستند. پس از تشکیل زغال‌سنگ، بر اثر هوازدگی کانی‌های آهن‌دار اولیه مانند پیریت، کانی‌های ژاروسیت، ناتروژاروسیت، هماتیت و گوتیت با خاستگاه ثانویه تشکیل شده‌اند. کانی­های برلینیت، روتیل، کروندوم، پلاژیوکلاز و میکروکلین در زغال‌سنگ معدن غزنوی خاستگاه اولیه (درونزاد) نداشته و طی رسوبگذاری مواد آلی به صورت ثانویه (برونزاد) از بیرون وارد حوضه رسوبی شده­اند. وجود کانی‌های کوارتز، پلاژیوکلاز، فلدسپات قلیایی، روتیل و کروندوم نشان می‌دهد که این کانی‌ها برآمده از فرسایش واحدهای آذرین قدیمیتر مثل بازالت سلطان میدان و گرانیت­های قلیایی منطقه خوش‌ییلاق هستند که به محیط‌های باتلاقی حمل شده­اند. در زغال‌سنگ­های مورد بررسی دو نسل پیریت وجود دارد. پیریت­های درونزاد نسل اول، خودشکل بوده و در زمینه زغال‌سنگ پراکنده هستند. پیریت‌های درونزاد نسل دوم، دانه ریز و بی‌شکل هستند و پس از تشکیل زغال‌سنگ­ها به صورت پرکننده درز و شکافها دیده می‌شوند. بررسی یک نمونه زغال‌سنگ معدن غزنوی با روش طیف­سنجی تبدیل فوریه فروسرخ (FT-IR) نشان می‌د­هد که در آن علاوه بر کانی‌های سیلیکاته و رسی، گروه­های عاملی و همچنین ارتعاشات کششی C=C آروماتیک در رابطه با بخش آلی و گروه عاملی OH مربوط به حضور کانی‌های آبدار در این زغال‌سنگ­ها وجود دارند.
