مجموعه دگرگونی محمودآباد بخشی از پهنه دگرگونی سنندج- سیرجان است که در جنوب­شرق شاهین­دژ برون­زد دارد. سنگ­های دگرگونی مجموعه محمودآباد اغلب متاپلیت بوده و برون­زدهای محدودی از متابازیت­های توده­ای و برگواره­دار در این مجموعه حضور دارند، که در این پژوهش متابازیت­های این مجموعه بررسی شده­اند. متابازیت­ها کانی­شناسی آمفیبول و پلاژیوکلاز را نشان می­دهند که معرف رخساره آمفیبولیت هستند. ترکیب شیمی پلاژیوکلاز از نوع آندزین و لابرادوریت و آمفیبول از نوع منیزیوهورنبلند و ترمولیت است. نتایج دما- فشارسنجی محاسبه شده به روش­های مختلف، دمای 430 تا 750 درجه سانتی­گراد و فشار 6 تا 13 کیلوبار را نشان می­دهند که تقریباً معادل شیب زمین­گرمایی 20 تا 25 درجه سانتی­گراد بر کیلومتر است. برپایه داده­های زمین­شیمیایی سنگ کل، آمفیبولیت­های مجموعه محمودآباد از نوع ارتوآمفیبولیت بوده و بیشتر ترکیب بازالتی دارند. شاخص­های زمین­شیمیایی این آمفیبولیت­ها با جایگاه زمین­ساختی پشت قوس قاره­ای همخوانی دارد. احتمالاً آمفیبولیت­های مجموعه محمودآباد، معرف فعالیت ماگمایی مافیک جایگاه پشت قوس قاره­ای ناشی از فرورانش حوضه اقیانوسی نئوتتیس به زیر سنگ­کره قاره­ای سنندج- سیرجان است که دستخوش دگرگونی کرانه فعال قاره­ای یا برخورد شده­اند.
