آگات که در زبان فارسی عقیق نامیده می‌شود، یکی از سنگ‌های نیمه قیمتی فراوان ایران است که از معدن آگات بایگ در شمال غرب تربت حیدریه استخراج می‌شود. تعیین کانی‌شناسی آگات برای انتخاب روش مناسب تراش و بهسازی دارای اهمیت است. از این رو در این پژوهش کانی‌شناسی آگات‌های معدن بایگ با استفاده از بررسی­های میکروسکوپی تصاویر، میکروسکوپ الکترونی روبشی و طیف­سنجی لیزر رامان بررسی شد. از نظر کانی‌شناسی، کلسدونی به‌عنوان کانی اصلی آگات معرفی می‌شود. اما بررسی­ها نشان داد که کانی‌های آگات‌های معدن بایگ به ترتیب فراوانی اوپال، کلسدونی و موگانیت هستند. در نمونه‌های دستی کانی کلسدونی سفید و شیری­رنگ و کانی اوپال خاکستری تا تیره است. مقادیر عناصر Al و  Naو Ba و Sr برآمده از تجزیه طیف­سنجی جرمی پلاسمای جفت شده القایی (ICP-MS) بخش‌های تشکیل شده از اوپال نشان داد که سیال­های جوی، گرمابی و فرایند آذرین در شکل‌گیری اوپال‌ها نقش داشته­اند.
